Bipolar Ionization Air Purifiers vs Viruses
There are many different types of viruses in existence due to the variety of genomic structures. Viruses contain more structural genomic diversity than plants, animals, archaea or bacteria. Unfortunately, due to the small size of viruses, many filtration technologies (including HEPA) are unable to trap most viral particles, allowing them to slip through and be re-introduced to the environment in the airstream. A result no one wants!
As bipolar ionization is a non-selective, rapid killing technology, it offers a unique and safe solution to kill airborne viruses 24/7, reducing the risk of disease and infections outbreaks. According to Dr. John Oxford*, “Bipolar ionization has proven to be effective against a number of viruses: H1N1 influenza, H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu), and corona.”
How does bipolar ionization work? Basically, the patented bipolar plasma technology rapidly destroys pathogens using a combination of physical reactions (electroporation, electron bombardment, etching etc). Much like sunlight does in the atmosphere, needlepoint brush type ionizers produce a natural bio-climate rich in positive and negative oxygen ions. The negative ions contain an extra electron while the positive ions are missing an electron resulting in an unstable condition. In an effort to re-stabilize, these bipolar ions seek out atoms and molecules in the air to trade electrons with, effectively neutralizing particulate matter, bacteria and virus cells, odorous gases, aerosols, and VOCs.
Advantages of Bipolar Ionization (BPI) over Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) include:
- Lower equipment costs
- Lower operating/energy consumption costs
- Lower installation costs
- Much lower maintenance and replacement costs, no bulbs to replace
- Ability to reduce odors
- Causes particulates to agglomerate thus improving particulate filter efficiencies
- No mercury containing UV lamps
- No danger to eyes or skin
- No degradation of interior materials
- No risk to occupants of stray UV radiation in spaces where upper ceiling UVGI systems are employed
- No ozone produced with needlepoint ionizers
Ionization air cleaners have been used in HVAC systems for over fifty years, originally in Europe. Ionizers have been available in the U.S. for over twenty years and have been successfully used in thousands of buildings improving air quality while saving first costs and ongoing energy per the Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP) of ASHRAE’s Standard 62.1.
Contact Central Consolidated today and have them install one (or many, depending upon your needs and facility size) of these highly versatile self-balancing units on your system(s). There are a number of different application options available as they may be installed at the fan inlet of an air handling unit, fan coil unit, PTAC, heat pump and even a VRF ductless split system.
